THE arrest of self-confessed Westmoreland ganja farmer 'Ras Puddler' has angered some Jamaica Observer online readers.
The home of Ras Puddler was raided on Wednesday -- a day after he was featured on the front page of the Observer suggesting that marijuana should be decriminalised, but not legalised. The police say he will be charged with breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act. While some readers have blamed the man for revealing too much, others say the police should be focused on going after "serious" offenders. Here are some edited comments:
Well, we all know that this is the only conviction most police officers in Jamaica can get. Most of them are ganja police. Everybody else walk free. This man has probably [never] hurt a fly, and dem now have him locked up for bush, which grows naturally. What are they trying to do? Make an example out of him?
It would now appear that Jamaicans cannot express themselves freely, as doing so will have you lose your visa, or locked up. He that keeps his mouth keeps his visa and his ganja!
He smoked the weed of 'wisdom', but lacked wisdom greatly.
Crime has gone up by 6%. So what will arresting this man do to solve this problem? As far as I can see, the police have been doing the same things over and over and can't manage the crime. They need to leave people doing petty and trivial things and go tackle the bigger issues.
Society is governed by rules of order, and the rule of law must prevail.
This is great policing. Instead of working on collecting DNA evidence to capture rapists, going undercover to decipher the murderous plans of our gangs and stop the flow of guns or heaven forbid actually setting up surveillance to catch extortionists in the act, why not just wait on the Observer to publish stories and then move in for the kill. Bravo, I feel safer already.
If he was smoking at the event with police officers around, why didn't they arrest him then and what about the foreign nationals who were also smoking at the event? Why weren't they arrested?
Too much work. While arresting Ras... Kingston is being overrun by crime and criminal elements. What a shame!
The country is being overrun with serious crimes like robberies and murders. The court system is overburdened with unresolved cases; many involve violent criminals and ordinary citizens who have been waiting far too long to get justice. And the police have resources and time to arrest a non-violent person; who is actually adding to our tourism product, only because of a article published in the papers.
It's time we leave the Rastas alone. Concentrate on crack and cocaine. We should have developed an industry around ganja long time ago.
Jamaica has become the laughing stock of the international community.
Ole John Crow
The man say 'Don't legalise it', now police lock him up. How ironic?
Cock mouth kill cock. I think we are talking too much. It's not everything good fi eat good fi talk.
...I think it's time they begin to back off and be modern where MARIJUANA is concerned.
Ignorance at its finest on both sides, but shame on the JCF. Real fishermen don't shoot fish in barrels. My bet is Ras Puddler is known to ALL in the community for what he does.
JP and Gov't regulators act as though weed will stop growing in Jamaica; that the plant will somehow escape from the ground and never return. It's the stupidest waste of resources trying to destroy ppl for smoking it.
Leave Ras Puddler alone! Free Ras! Free Ras!
Sleazy on the part of the cops!
Yeah man, lock up the dread ...so Jamaica soon start import ganja from America.
