Spanish chain spearheads US$200m hotel construction in Trelawny

THE local tourism industry will see the addition of two more hotels to the sector as the Spanish chain H10 Hotels injects US$200 million to expand its operations in the Caribbean.

H10 Hotels operates in the Caribbean under the brand Ocean by H10 Hotels, which is a joint venture between the Spanish hotel chain and Canadian tour operator, Transat A T Inc.

Ocean has operations in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Cuba, but Jamaica will be the first country in the English-speaking Caribbean to accommodate the hotel brand.

According to Spanish businessman and H10 investor, Carlos Moleon, the two hotels will be located in Coral Springs, near Falmouth in Trelawny and will have a total of 800 rooms.

Moleon was speaking at a press briefing held at the Jamaica Tourist Board's New Kingston headquarters yesterday.

"H10 believes that the Jamaican Government has done a great job with the reforms towards foreign investments and that is why H10 has decided to heavily invest in Jamaica. The total investment will come to approximately US$200 million, and once the hotels are opened about 1,000 jobs will be there to facilitate direct employment," Moleon said.

He added that construction of the two hotels is set to start next year and the first of the two, which will be an all-inclusive hotel for families and will have 425 sea-view luxury rooms, should be completed by 2018. The second hotel, which will be an adult-only all-inclusive resort to house 375 sea-view rooms, will be opened later.

"With our alignment and joint venture with Transat A T, we have guaranteed through the tour operator the hotel will be full, obviously any new product that comes from a new brand will bring new products and services. We believe a new brand in the island is always good because it spreads the tourists in the different areas and from the different markets," Moleon responded when asked what will make the Ocean Hotel brand different from the rest.

Moleon maintained that H10 will be coming with a very competitive product as the quality of Jamaican tourism has been consistently improving.

"Jamaica has a brand; Jamaica has a name, everybody outside loves Jamaica... Jamaican prices are higher than all the other destination prices in the Caribbean, so we are expecting good rates," he said.
