Police release 26 Spanish Town detainees, hold 3

By COREY Robinson Observer staff reporter

Monday, March 08, 2010

Police yesterday said that all but three of the 29 persons detained in last week's massive operation on St John's Road in Spanish Town, St Catherine, have been released.

Superintendent Derrick Champagnie, one of the commanders of the St Catherine North Division, said that the three persons, which include a woman, are being investigated in relation to several shootings in the area.

"The others were processed and released but these three, which includes a female, are being investigated in relation to several shootings, including last week's incident where the persons were shot in the churchyard," he said.

Three persons were killed and five others shot and injured two Fridays ago when gunmen, travelling in a Suzuki Vitara motor car, opened fire at them at the Love Worship Centre on St John's Road in Spanish Town.

The men were repairing a section of the church building when the gunmen pounced. Two of them died on the spot while the third succumbed to his injuries at the Kingston Public Hospital on Tuesday.

Police responded to the heinous incident by launching a massive police/military operation in the community on Thursday to ferret out the persons responsible.

The operation was also part of a series to dismantle the notorious 'One Order' and 'Klansman' gangs operating out of Spanish Town.

In the meantime, another police officer in the division, told the Observer that a fourth person of interest in the shooting was arrested in an operation yesterday. No illegal firearm was found on him, however, the officer said.

"All of them are affiliated to the 'Klansman' gang. The men are believed to be linked to several gun crimes in the area, and the woman, she is said to be the getaway driver in the incidents, including the churchyard shooting," the cop said .

I would like to know if vital information is taken from the detainees, information such as direct address location, driver's license number, national ID number, photo snapshots, DNA, and possible known associates. Not because they are released does not imply that they have no prior associations or connections to previous crimes. The government may want to consider having all applicants for a Jamaican Drivers license submit finger prints. If we are to effectively combat crime, we have to stay current with modern crime fighting techniques. The criminals definitely are up to date and very sophisticated in some of their criminal activities. In other words, if the Jamaican crime fighting force doesn't stay updated, it will be out dated.
