KINGSTON, Jamaica — Corporal Dwight Smart has now been charged in relation to the shooting death Saturday of an eight-month pregnant woman and the injuring of her sister in St Thomas.
The cop was formally charged yesterday evening with murder, wounding with intent, illegal possession of a firearm and assault, as directed earlier this week by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Smart is expected in the Home Circuit Court after the new court term starts on September 17.
He is charged with the shooting death of 27-year-old Kay-Ann following a tussle after he accosted her over the use of an expletive. She was shot in the head. Her sister was shot in the shoulder after running towards her.
The incident sparked days of demonstrations in the vicinity of the Yallahs Police Station where the shooting took place.
