CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- A university rector says a student has been killed during a protest in Venezuela.

Jose Vicente Sanchez of the Experimental University of Tachira says Jesus Eduardo Ramirez was shot in the head during a protest in the western city of San Cristobal and died by the time he reached a hospital. Ramirez's age was unknown.

Sanchez says 11 other students were injured in yesterday's violence, and it isn't clear who was responsible for the shooting.

Sanchez tells Venezuelan TV channel Globovision that the clash involved supporters and opponents of President Hugo Chavez. He says doctors at a hospital confirmed that Ramirez had died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police in western Tachira state couldn't be reached for comment.
