KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Cabinet has approved a variation of close to $70 million to a contract previously awarded to Ranger Protection & Security Company Limited, for security services at the Ebony Park HEART Academy in Clarendon.

The variation of $68.8 million has increased the cost of the three-year contract to $552.6 million, with 19 months to go.

The contract was originally awarded to Ranger Protection & Security in 2012, however, it was subsequently terminated and awarded to Vanguard Security Limited in December 2013. The outstanding monies owed to Ranger and the funding of the new contract resulted in the increased cost.

Approval of the new contract was included in Ministry Paper Number 6 (Cabinet Agenda Issues), which was tabled in the House of Representatives on Tuesday. The variation was approved on December 2, 2013. No explanation was given for the termination of the contract.
