GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — The Guyana Transgender United group yesterday expressed shock at the murder of one of its members late on Tuesday night.

Police say they are probing the murder of transgender commercial sex worker, Noel Wilson Luthers, alias 'Nephi', who was shot while reportedly involved in a discussion with a man in the heart of the capital.

Media reports said that other sex workers who were in the area at the time reportedly rushed to the scene as the assailant sped away in a motor car.

Luthers was taken to the Georgetown Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead.

Earlier this week, members of the transgender community held a candlelight vigil to mark the first anniversary of the stabbing death of two transgender sex workers who were brutally killed by the former male lover of another transgender sex worker.

In a statement yesterday, the Guyana Transgender United group said it was saddened and shocked "to hear that another member has been gunned down".
