MIAMI, USA – A tropical storm warning is in effect for a number of Caribbean islands, including Montserrat, Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis as Tropical Storm Earl moved closer to the Leeward Islands today.
The Miami-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said that the storm which could become a Hurricane “by tonight or Sunday” was 800 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands with winds at 60 miles per hour.
A tropical storm warning has gone into effect for the French islands of Saint Martin, Saint, Barthelemy as well as Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, Saba and St Eustatius.
At 8.00 pm local time, the storm was located near latitude 15.8 north, longitude 51.2 west and a turn is expected over the next couple of days.
“On the forecast track, the center of Earl could approach the northern Leeward Islands on Sunday night,” NHC said, adding that “Earl could become a hurricane by tonight or Sunday”.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Danielle, the second named hurricane of the 2010 season is approximately 520 miles south-east of Bermuda packing winds of 110 miles per hour.
NHC has said that a tropical storm watch is in effect for Bermuda as Danielle is expected to pass “well to the east of Bermuda later today and tonight”.
“Danielle is a Category Two hurricane …and little change in strength is forecast during the next 24 hours,” NHC said adding that a gradual weakening is expected to begin on Sunday night.
