Tropical Storm Fiona moving quickly towards Leeward Islands

MIAMI, USA – One day after a close encounter with a Category Four Hurricane Earl, residents of the Leeward Islands were bracing for the passage of Tropical Storm Fiona that was moving quickly towards the chain of islands in the Eastern Caribbean.
At 8:00 am local time, Fiona was located 500 miles east of the Leeward Islands and the Miami-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said that tropical storm warnings have already been issued for St Martin and St Barthelemy while a tropical storm watch is in effect for Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, St Maarten, Saba and St Eustatius.
“Interest elsewhere in the northern leeward Islands should monitor the progress of Fiona. Additional watches or warnings may be required for a portion of this area later this morning,” the NHC said.
It said that Fiona has winds of 40 miles per hour and was located near latitude 15.8 north, longitude 54.4 west and moving towards the west-northwest near 24 miles per hour.
“A gradual turn towards the northwest and a decrease in forward speed is anticipated during the next 48 hours. On the forecast trace, the centre of Fiona is expected to pass near or northeast of the northern Leeward Islands early Wednesday,” NHC added.
It warned that some slow strengthening is expected during the next two days as the storm makes it way across the region and that tropical storm conditions could spread over portions of the northern Leeward Islands tonight or early Wednesday.
