Friday, June 25, 2010
THE Meteorological Service is reporting that the first tropical depression for the 2010 hurricane season has formed in the western Caribbean but is not a threat to Jamaica.
At 6:00 pm the centre of the newly formed Tropical Depression One was located near Latitude 15.5 North, Longitude 83.5 West or about 570 kilometres southeast of Cozumel, Mexico.
The depression is moving toward the west northwest near 17 kilometres per hour. This general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days. On this track, the depression will reach the Yucatán peninsula by late Saturday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 55 kilometres per hour with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast and the depression is expected to be a Tropical Storm tonight or Saturday.
The Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the situation.
