GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — Police were investigating the deaths of two children who were reportedly poisoned by their mother late on Thursday.

Relatives confirmed that Aweena Rutherford had picked the children from their aunt's home in Anns Grove, East Coast before carrying out the act.

Hospital authorities said that one year-old Jabari Cadogan and four-year-old Odacia died after consuming a poisonous substance. The mother is also reported to have drunk the poison and is now being treated at hospital.

The un-named aunt told reporters that after Aweena had picked up the children she had said she had a surprise for me. "I never imagined this was the surprise she calling about".

The father of the children, who is reported to living overseas, was due back in Guyana yesterday.
