THE University Hospital of the West Indies yesterday closed three of its seven operating theatres to service malfunctioning air-conditioning units.

The hospital's CEO, Dr Cecil White, told the Jamaica Observer that management had noticed an elevation in temperatures in the theatres and as a result they decided to service the units as a preventative measure.

"We have several theatres here. What we have done is rescheduled elective surgeries and are using other theatres for emergency surgeries," White said.

White said he expects the theatres to reopen by the middle of next week.
