UK detective charged with leaking information

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

LONDON, England (AP) — British prosecutors yesterday charged a senior detective with misconduct for allegedly leaking information to the now-defunct News of the World tabloid.

Chief Inspector April Casburn was accused of giving information to the Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid in September 2010, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

Casburn was charged under Operation Elveden, a British police investigation into inappropriate payments to police and public officials. She is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on October 1.

The corruption probe is running alongside investigations into phone and computer hacking sparked by revelations that reporters at Murdoch's News of the World tabloid routinely intercepted voicemails of those in the public eye.

Dozens have been arrested in the probes of media wrongdoing and corruption in Britain. Criminal charges have been brought against Rebekah Brooks, the former chief of Murdoch's British operations, and Andy Coulson, a former editor and the ex-communications chief for Prime Minister David Cameron.
