AN American woman is now in Jamaica seeking a passport for her new-born baby born to a surrogate mother in India.

She has been identified as 45-year-old Van Buren Green of New York according to a report in the Indian based website www.thehindu.com.

The child has been admitted at Rama's Institute for Fertility, Ameerpet, till she the child's passport is secured.

Green and her Jamaican husband decided to have a baby through a surrogate mother in December. A 30-year-old surrogate mother delivered a baby boy and Green flew down to the city to take custody of the baby.

Green recently went to a Passport office in Begumpet to obtain a passport for the baby. As per PSK officials' advice, she applied for a passport at the Regional Passport Office (RPO).

Last month Green returned to the RPO to ask about the status of the infant's passport. Upset over the response of RPO staff, she abandoned the child at the office and left the premises. Officials later pacified her and handed over the baby.

She went to New Delhi to seek more details from senior officials about the issue.

“As there is no Jamaica consulate in New Delhi, she left to her husband's native place to get passport for the infant. She will come back to take her child,” The Hindu quoted Institute Chairman PSN Prasad as saying.
