Vaz urges help for Portland flood victims
PORTLAND, Jamaica — West Portland member of Parliament, Daryl Vaz, is making an urgent appeal for donations of relief supplies including food, clothing and mattresses to assist Portland residents who have been seriously affected by heavy rains across the island.
He said the items can be taken to Food for the Poor at Ellerslie Pen in Spanish Town, St Catherine.
Vaz, who is currently in the Philippines leading an official fact finding mission in relation to the BPO sector there, expressed deep regret at the loss of property but said he was happy that there was no loss of lives.
“The reports received so far are that some homes have been completely flooded out by water, in some cases, above knee height resulting in the loss of household items which have been severely damaged beyond repair. Debris and falling boulders have also caused damage to infrastructure,” Vaz said in a release.
