Vybz Kartel staying in jail for another 30 days
Will miss Reggae Sumfest

DETAINED danchehall act Vybz Kartel will have to spend another 30 days behind bars after the authorities extended his five-day detention order.
The entertainer was yesterday served papers informing of his further detention, his lawyer, Christian Tavares- Finson told the Observer this morning.
Tavares-Finson however said that the legal team would be seeking the entertainer's release at the Emergency Powers Review Tribunal set up in the wake of the calling on May 23 of a State of Public Emergency to combat criminals loyal to accused drug lord and former Tivoli Gardens strongman Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.
"We will be going to the tribunal to get him released," Tavares-Finson said.
Vybz Kartel's five-day detention order was scheduled to end today, his lawyer said.
Kartel was detained last week Friday and underwent intense questioning after turning himself to the Greater Portmore Police Station, some three days after the police named him and five other men as major persons of interest.
The artiste, whose given name is Adijah Palmer, was questioned in relation to criminal gangs in Portmore, St Catherine.
Due to the extension of his detention, the artiste will now miss several bookings, both local and overseas, including the annual summer show Reggae Sumfest in a few weeks time.
When Kartel turned in himself last week, his detention was extended from 24 hours to five days.

I am hoping the police have real evidence for this because nothing else could justify the detention of a citizen for this extended period. Filthy music is not a crime unless there is a law out there that I am not aware of. How come Bruce just stop defending the rights of Jamaican citizens nowadays........ how come?
7/9/2010
I personally cant stand Kartel but have to be objective what has he been charged with? I wish coarseness & vulgarity were crimes but sadly they arent,
Are the police incapable of making a case against a man they have detained? How many nameless faceless “Kartels” have been detained since May 24 for charges unknown? I support the effort to curb crime and violence but not the abuse of state powers the police seem determined to squander the unprecedented public support they have had.

Jamaicans need to be mindful of what we support and allow to happen in our society.....the power is with the people
7/9/2010
The police have heard allegations againts many politicians and 'topanaris" but they will never dare to lock them up without charging them for 30 Days!!!! If they had any concrete evidence they would have charged him.No justice in Ja. for the "lower class".
7/9/2010
Frederick Bolageer,i guess the detention of hundreds of so-called suspects in Guantanamo Bay for SEVERAL YEARS,is justice in your opinion. And that is only one example.
7/9/2010
Mr Golding and Mr Ellington need to be mindful of the messages that these actions are sending. They eagerly wanted him to come in for questioning, they questioned him. what is the reason for his prolonged detention ?. Mr Ellington , how can your officers detain someone indefinately, for no apparent reason ? and then you wish for the citizenry to cooperate with your officers in the fight against crime. where does the police power end and the citizens rights begin ? and who protects these rights ?
7/9/2010
What is he being charged for? For knowing gangstas in Portmore are you serious. Plus for those talking about his bad boy image I don't see any of you complaining when your kids are watching cartoos with sex and lesbian jokes in them. You give him static over his gun lyrics yet you have no problem going to see a movie full of guns.
7/9/2010
He should stay there for another year or so. I am pretty sure they have some serious allegations against him. After he is release he will be forced to choose between music and badness. Well done police.
7/9/2010
mark jones/ Rudy Reds, I agree with you 1000%, this is one of the reason why any changes to put Jamaica on the right track is beyond our dreams. We're a nation of hypocrites.
7/9/2010
I personally resent all these individuals who make posts glorifying the detention of Kartel just because they do not like the content of his music. We live in modern times, if you don't like his music skip the track , change the radio station.
However, how can one justify a man's detention for a month , costing him lots of money , on the content of his music?. The picked him up for questioning and he has to spend a month in Jail. There is definitely no justice in Jamaica at all.

i have no program with the fact that teh government is now aggressively tackling the crime problem in Jamaica. However, we must be careful that people's right are not taken away. This seeems to be the case with Kartel now. 30 more days without been charge? thats rediculous. am sure they know that the man has to work to earn a living. attack the criminals, but dont abuse people's fundamental rights
7/9/2010
If the police have information that requires his extended detention then so be it. However, we must never forget human rights regardless of his lewd behaviour or lyrics.
7/9/2010
yes, write better music, the man educated and yet still a mislead the youths an a incite violence, and even using his music as threats to other innocent law abiding citizens. but ruby has a point, the police can be very abusive and unfair, having no respect for citizens rights.
7/9/2010
While I'm no fan of Kartel or dirty music, he can't be blamed for the venomous behavior of the JA people. Corruption & unenforced laws is directly responsible for the break down of morals & discipline in JA. If the current laws on the books in JA were enforced without political influence & favors, Kartel and every Jamaican would be living in a more civil & productive Jamaica today. He still have the right to free speech. Parents are responsible for raising their kids, not Kartel or any DJ.
7/9/2010
i hope Al Miller is there talking some sense to him.
7/9/2010
A weh you get da cell deh daadi, the bars them thick en no paadi, real bad man no wear prison overalls, straigh jeans cut off foot pants.....
Round up movado to just to be fair! and how come AL never get 30 days!!!
7/9/2010
What most of you posters don't understand and will not understand is that this is only Kartel. What about the hundreds that remain locked up without being charged? Should they use the time to write lyrics? After persons suffer this injustice at the hands of the police, can they like or trust them afterwards?
You are all crazy...I wish you find yourself in a similar position...
Remember Keith Clarke...He suffered what many ghetto youth have suffered at the hands of OUR police.
7/9/2010
Them must send him to GP mek him sing the tune of the piper nuh him sing song bout " Faggot Correction" mek them correct him in the institution then man.
7/9/2010
Man of Injustice...
If the man has done something to warrant him being behind bars, what is the charge? I think you deserve to be behind bars more than Kartel...
7/9/2010
Kartel, mi fren, di nuh look good fi yuh atal. With this decision, it is probably safe to say that the big dogs have dug up some dirt on you. Someone has implicated you in questionable activities and it smells as if the intelligence gathered against you has a lot of weight. Watch di ride my youth; rumours have it that 'music' is only responsible for about 1/3 of your Empire. A long time Bounty a tell yuh fi hold a bible a seh 'halleluiah,' but yuh seh 'man a bad man,' suh stop di bawling. Peace!
7/9/2010
People are you listening to yourselves, even if he sings violent lyrics, that in and of itself is nt a crime....We have to be careful how we are just willing to rush to support trampling of peoples rights. If the police have something concrete thats different but its not right to just support a persons extended detention just because of the songs he sings, as inciteful and derogatory as we deem them to be
7/9/2010
Kartel a nuh nuh angel still but this look a way
7/9/2010
"State of Emergency kartel a suffer round here". Politics mashing up Jamaica. Kartel should use the time to reflect and write music.
7/9/2010
well nobody will miss u Simone Nelson or Kartel, he shud def use this time to reflect on his behavior and image and find something good out of it. if he wasnt so hard headed and love media attention, he wud ave given up himself from the get go and he wouldve been released a long time ago
7/9/2010
Good. People like these who spout dirty, profane & filthy lyrics and publicly live equally similar lives while hiding under the disguises of "entertainer" and "culture", & displaying callous disregard for the moral upliftment of the people & especially the youths of this country by using their influence to promote "badmanism' instead of decency should always be locked away for the public good.I believe in the right to free speech, but even that shud hav a limit, especially in these violent times
7/9/2010
This is crazy, I'm very upset, what is Sumfest without Vybz Kartel! I won't be waisting my money this year!
7/9/2010
Bway mi no kno but mi no tink sey de hol' him jus fi di fun a it . So lets juust wait and see if any charges will be laid against him . We are living in interesting times .I don't want to jump the gun but some of these guys are wolf in sheep clothing.
7/9/2010
I hope he use this time to reflect and clean up his act. The Bad Boy image has done nothing good for him and will only get him in more trouble.. Let this be a lesson learnt.
