X6 murder suspect remanded

BY PAUL HENRY Crime/court co-ordinator henryp@jamaicaobserver.com

Friday, July 29, 2011

PATRICK Powell, the businessman accused of murdering 17-year-old Khajeel Mais, was remanded in custody when he appeared in the High Court in Kingston this morning. Powell's attorney Patrick Atkinson, did not file a bail application as there was no forensic report and further statements needed to be served by the prosecution.

Powell will next appear in court on September 16.

Mais was killed when the driver of a BMW X6 sports utility vehicle fired shots into a taxi in which he was travelling on his way to a fete on July 1. He was hit in the head and died at hospital.

Homicide investigators zoned in on Powell and raided his Belgrade Loop home and seized two X6 vehicles days after the killing.

Powell was off the island at the time of the raid and was arrested when he re-entered Jamaica days later.
