Yallahs cop returns to court today

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

CORPORAL Dwayne Smart, who has been charged with the death of an eight-month pregnant woman in St Thomas, was Monday remanded into custody when he appeared in the Home Circuit Court.

Smart will next appear in court today when a bail application will be made on his behalf by attorney Valerie Neita-Robertson.

The police corporal was appearing in court for the first time since being charged with murder for the September 2 shooting death of 27-year-old Kay-Ann Lamont at Yallahs in the parish.

Lamont was killed after she and Smart allegedly got into a tussle after he tried arresting her for the use of expletives. He is also alleged to have shot and injured her sister who was running towards her.

Attorneys Tom Tavares-Finson and his son Chris are watching the court proceedings on behalf of the estate of the dead woman.
