Campari CEO: Supporting Germany in World Cup is good for my health

When the big man of the Campari Group flew into town last week to get a closer view of the growth of his group's local acquisition — J Wray & Nephew — discussing football might have been furthest from his mind.

Bob Kunze-Concewitz, born in Istanbul, Turkey, is the product of an Austrian couple, so the Austrian citizen, it stood to reason, must have football blood running through his veins, what with both countries of personal association having the sport as a standard staple in their diet.

With none of the two teams competing in the World Cup set for Russia this summer, normally it would have been simple for the Campari Group CEO to predict a winner, or name his big favourite.

But like a cautious goalkeeper who would prefer to clear the ball with a long kick way upfield with seconds remaining in a close match, rather than pass it to his defender close to his goal line, Bob chose the better option.

“I like watching football. Unfortunately my pick is not going to be playing, but I would go for the default position — my wife is German, so I think it would be good for my health to support Germany,” said Kunze-Concewitz in confessing his love for the sport, one that other members of his family follow closely.

And while the World Cup is going on, Kunze-Concewitz will be leaning back when time allows, sipping his favourite wine or spirit under the Campari Group brand and enjoying the action.

But just what is his favourite drink among the over 50 brands that the company has on show? “It's like asking somebody if he has a favourite child. Depending on where I am, the mood of the day and the season, it changes. What I really enjoy when I come to Jamaica is RumPari, a mixture of White Overproof Rum and Campari. I like White Overproof Rum quite a bit… and Ting has always been very enjoyable with it.

“I also enjoy the Negroni, which is the best — selling Campari cocktail in the world. It's one of our historical cocktails which originally is essentially Campari with Vermouth and gin. I really like substituting the gin with Appleton Estate 12 with the Rare Blend, and it tastes phenomenal.”

J Wray & Nephew Ltd, the Jamaica-based subsidiary company of the Campari Group, has been associated with sport in Jamaica for several decades.

On a broader scale, Campari Group supports a lot of sporting events. The company had for three years been a major sponsor of Manchester United Football Club in England and it has also been involved with Motor GP motorcycle racing, and also supports tennis tournaments, mainly through its Aperol brand, one of which is the ongoing Australian Tennis Open in Melbourne, Australia, for which Aperol is one of the main sponsors.
