Cancer society pays tribute to Michael Pryce
Wednesday, December 16, 2009
THE Jamaica Cancer Society yesterday expressed regrets at the passing of radio and television journalist Michael Pryce, who died Monday in the United Kingdom.
Pryce, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma cancer in January 2006, was hailed by the cancer society for his "courageous battle with this very serious bone marrow disease for almost four years, which helped to put a face on this illness".
"As one of our leading journalists, Michael drew public attention to cancer, which is one of the leading causes of death in Jamaica. His decision not to suffer in silence, helped dispel some of the fear which often surrounds cancer," said the cancer society's chairman, Earl Jarrett.
"We commend Michael for his advocacy and selfless support of the work of the Jamaica Cancer Society, which were instrumental in encouraging others to become volunteers in the prevention and control of this disease. Indeed, his contribution to the annual 'Relay for Life' event was evidence of his desire to serve the wider community," he added.
At the same time, the society has urged others diagnosed with cancer to emulate Michael's sterling efforts in fostering greater understanding of cancer and its treatment.
