THE police say one of their colleagues was shot and injured during an attack in Effortville, May Pen, Clarendon, yesterday, and one of Clarendon's most wanted men was fatally shot.

Dead is Nico Walters, otherwise called “Freckles” or “Speckles” of Effortville. The police, in a release from its communication arm, Corporate Communications Unit, said he was wanted for several crimes committed in the parish.

Reports from the police are that, about 11:25 am, Walters opened gunfire at the police team, hitting one of the officers. The gunfire was reportedly returned and Walters was shot.

The police say a 9mm pistol was found beside him. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The policeman is currently being treated, the release said yesterday.

The Inspectorate of Constabulary and the Independent Commission of Investigations are probing, the police said.
