Compassionate care programme to be introduced

Thursday, March 22, 2018

HEALTH Minister Dr Christopher Tufton says a compassionate care programme designed to drive the customer care element in the public health system will be introduced.

The programme, which involves health care providers being close to patients and viewing their situation as more than a medical scenario and routine procedure, is set for launch on March 27, at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital in downtown Kingston.

“Too often the patient, who is the client or the customer, feels as if they owe us an obligation to come to us to be treated. We do not deliver the care with the type of service quality that is required,” the minister said.

He was speaking at the 50th anniversary launch of Biomedical Caledonia Laboratory Limited in Kingston on Tuesday.

The minister emphasised the importance of partnerships, which are needed especially in a sector “where we are underfunded and we are not always on the cutting edge of technology (and) of service quality”.

Dr Tufton congratulated Biomedical and its team of professionals for 50 years of service to the people of Jamaica and urged other local entities to copy the company's formula for success.

“It is important that you see yourself as part of that value chain of health care that is essential to helping Jamaicans to lead quality lives,” he said.

In his remarks, Member of Parliament for St Andrew South Eastern, Julian Robinson, added his voice of congratulations to the team and board of Biomedical.

“The quality of the staff, the professionalism that is demonstrated, is of the highest standard, and I want to commend them,” he said.

The company's Managing Director Barbara Hendriks said its 50th anniversary celebrations present a moment to pause and reflect on its journey and “to look ahead to the mountainous terrain we still have to travel”.

Hendriks informed that before year end, Biomedical will extend its satellite stations from 48 to 50.

Established in 1968, Biomedical Caledonia Medical Laboratory Limited is the first medical laboratory to receive accreditation from the Jamaica National Agency for Accreditation.

The laboratory utilises state-of-the-art methods and cutting-edge technology in order to provide clients with the best service, which includes a Laboratory Information System for data management.

The laboratory offers services in drug testing and phlebotomy, among others.
