DR Jacquiline A Bisasor-McKenzie has been appointed acting chief medical officer in the Ministry of Health, effective today.

She will fill the vacancy left by Dr Winston De La Haye, who demitted office yesterday.

A ministry release said Dr De La Haye had previously stated his intention to leave his post at the ministry to pursue other opportunities. “The ministry thanks Dr De La Haye for his tenure and wishes him all the best,” the release said.

Dr Bisasor-McKenzie has 25 years of experience in the health care system in Jamaica and was the first emergency physician to be appointed as a consultant in the public sector. She served as head of the Accident & Emergency Department at the Spanish Town Hospital from 2005-2014 until she joined the ministry as director, Emergency Medical Services. She later assumed the role of principal medical officer and director, Emergency Disaster Management and Special Services in August 2016. Her recent work at the ministry includes the reduction of waiting time initiatives in the emergency departments that have seen improvements in patient flow in the emergency department and increased capacity at nearby health centres.

Dr Bisasor-McKenzie completed her bachelors of science, bachelors of medicine and surgery, masters in public health and doctor of medicine in emergency medicine at the University of the West Indies. She has represented the country at various national, regional and international meetings, served as a member of Caribbean Health Disaster Coordinator's Committee and as a board member of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management. She has also served as the president of the Jamaica Emergency Medicine Association.

The chief medical officer of Jamaica is the head of the Technical Services Division and is the chief technical advisor on all medical and health matters to the minister of health, as well as to the Government of Jamaica.
