Fire guts Builder's Depot in Port Antonio

Thursday, October 05, 2017

PORT ANTONIO, Portland — A section of the Builder's Depot Hardware and Home Goods store was yesterday morning gutted by fire, leaving millions of dollars in damage.

According to the fire department, the blaze started sometime after three o'clock and the Port Antonio Fire Brigade responded immediately.

“We received the call about 3:06 am and we responded and got assistance from Bufff Bay. When we arrived we had some challenges but we managed to save one vehicle that was on the premises in the section that was on fire,” said Windell Patterson, deputy Port Antonio fire chief.

“…We had challenges as we accessed the building. We had no water although we requested assistance from the National Water Commission and we were told that they would divert water from a different source because they had some challenges from the Grant's Level area. We then took water from the sea again, but had a challenge as pebbles and sand affected the system,” said the firefighter.

“If we had the water we could actually save the [premises] in terms of the fire spreading,” said Patterson. “The lumber yard is intact and so we want to commend the men on the good work they had done,” said the firefighter.

“… Millions of dollars has gone up in smoke, but we managed to save a section of the building,” he said.

Twenty-eight people are employed to the hardware.
