Flow says 20,000 Jamaicans expected to go 'digital' with Project Rise

Telecoms firm launches voice-activated smartphone, connectivity pilot programme

THOUSANDS of Jamaicans are being given the opportunity to participate in the digital era with access to affordable smartphones through a pilot programme led by telecommunications provider Flow and its parent company Liberty Latin America (LLA).

Flow said Jamaica was selected for the trial programme “that is designed to unlock the possibilities and conveniences available on the Internet, with the push of a button”.

The company on Sunday introduced Project Rise, a complete mobile solution inclusive of a user-friendly, voice-activated smart mobile phone, which it said is set to become a key enabler of digital connectivity for an estimated 20,000 Jamaicans by the end of December.

Flow Country Manager Stephen Price said the company is optimistic that this new mobile solution, powered by a KaiOS system and Google Assist functionalities, will unlock a world of possibilities with a simple voice command.

“Project Rise brings new possibilities through connectivity to groups of people that have been unable to take part in the digital era, ensuring access to the tools necessary to achieve progress,” Price said.

“Connectivity is key to helping Jamaica achieve its national development outcome of creating a technology-enabled society. The mission of Project Rise is to bridge the proverbial digital divide for hundreds of Jamaicans including the most vulnerable – such as the elderly, those without the strength of pocket and those who feel like technology forgot them – for as little as $100 per day,” Price added.

The programme, which was launched during a community treat hosted by the company at the Boys' Town Football Field in Kingston, will see the telecommunications firm distributing the mobile connectivity bundle within communities of downtown Kingston and in sections of Spanish Town this year.

“We conducted a lot of research that helped to inform every decision regarding this project,” Price said. Consumer education and the benefits of mobile data, he told the launch, have been identified as key in driving the success of Project Rise, which Price said will be a major part of the sign-up and activation process.

In the meantime, Price said Flow remained passionate about supporting Jamaica's digital advancement by aggressively working to expand and improve its 4G/LTE data network across the island with a special focus on rural and remote areas.

“We are also committed to leveraging our regional position and scale to seek out, embrace and facilitate new technologies that can make a difference in the life of our customers,” Price said.
