Cops seek driver in deadly car chase
Wednesday, February 03, 2010
POLICE were yesterday searching for the driver of a Toyota Belta motor car which mowed down three women, killing two of them, during a high-speed chase with cops in May Pen, Clarendon on Monday night.
The dead women were identified as Jasmine Scully, 64, and Marva Gardner, 36, both of Newland district in Tollgate, Clarendon.
The police reported that Othalia Gardner, who was also injured in the accident, was released from hospital yesterday afternoon.
The constabulary's Director of Communication Karl Angell said yesterday that it would be beneficial to the fugitive driver if he turned himself in to the police.
"...We are appealing to him to immediately turn himself in to the nearest police station. That would be best," Angell said.
Police said they signalled the driver of the Toyota and that of a Nissan Bluebird motor car travelling close behind on the Tollgate main road to stop, but the drivers disobeyed the orders.
The police subsequently gave chase, which ended when the driver of the Toyota drove onto the road's soft shoulder, hit a utility pole and slammed into the women.
He then fled the scene, leaving behind approximately 1,307 pounds of marijuana inside the vehicle.
Police said an additional 679.4 pounds of the contraband was also found in the Nissan motor car. That driver also fled. But investigations led to the arrest of another man in Portmore, St Catherine, Angell said.
