Dads lash out against Family Court
Fathers have rights too!
Observer Reporter
Saturday, June 14, 2003

"Honk your horn if yu love yu pickney!"

"Father's have rights, too!"

"Family Court is a woman's court!"

These were some of the chants shouted by this two-man protest outside the Family Court on Kings Street in Downtown Kingston yesterday, under the Court's hole-riddled sign.

Lanny Davidson and Carl Brady, two fathers who claim they have been unfairly treated by Jamaica's Family Court, raised colourful placards to vent their anger. Their mini protest they said, was a prelude to the international "Million Dads March" to be held in Washington DC and other cities around the world, on Father's Day, June 15th.

"The purpose of this protest is to highlight the bad treatment that fathers get from the Family Court," Davidson said angrily. "I have a daughter and was barred from visiting her because I am a man."

Brady had his own complaints.

"The Court does not care what financial pressures a man faces. If you don't have money, they throw you into jail. This is not fair," he said.

He added: "If your car engine needs replacing and you have to spend the money, if you live with your family, they know how to ban' dem belly. But try and tell that to the judge when you and a woman split. The judge don't care, they only want to hear about the money."

Davidson, who is also the founder of the groups Father's Crisis Centre and Fathers in Action, said he will be carrying his protest to Emancipation Park on Father's Day. His aim, he said, is to press for fathers to have parental equality before the island's judiciary system.
