Haiti, Ja to re-establish diplomatic ties June 21

Saturday, June 12, 2004

HAITI'S Ambassador to Jamaica Jean-Gabriel Augustin, who was recalled in March, will return to Kingston on June 21, the foreign ministry confirmed yesterday.

The Observer first reported last Sunday that the Haitian Government and written to Jamaica, seeking to re-establish diplomatic ties following strained relations.
The foreign ministry said the Jamaican Government has received a letter from Interim Haitian Prime Minister Gerard Latortue, indicating his willingness to cooperate with Jamaica and the Caribbean Community.

At the same time, the foreign ministry yesterday reiterated Jamaica's commitment to continue working with Haiti toward their attainment of stability, democracy, peace and prosperity.

Latortue recalled his ambassador in March, shortly after the Jamaican Government decided to grant temporary asylum to the ousted Haitian president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who arrived in Jamaica on March 15. The Jamaican Government said he was being given 10 weeks to reunite with his wife and two daughters.
Aristide was ousted on February 29 during a bloody uprising led by rebel army members.
Aristide, who accused France and the United States of kidnapping him and flying him to the Central African Republic, left Jamaica two Sundays ago for South Africa to take up asylum indefinitely. He has, however, vowed to return to his homeland when there is stability.
