Two cops shot
Rio Bueno spot check turns bloody
Observer Reporter
Saturday, July 10, 2004

WESTERN BUREAU - Two policemen were yesterday shot and injured while they conducted spot check duties along the Rio Bueno main road in Trelawny.

The names of the policemen were not released and the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), the police's information arm, could not say last night what was the extent of the injuries suffered by the two cops. Both were treated at the Falmouth Public Hospital.

Sergeant Andrea Brown, CCN spokesperson for Trelawny, told the Observer yesterday afternoon that the two policemen were shot by a passenger in a white car travelling from Falmouth at about 3:00 am. The policemen, Brown said, were in the process of checking documents for a truck, which they had just stopped, when the car drove up and one of the passengers in the rear wound down the window and fired shots at the lawmen, hitting both of them. The car then sped off, said the CCN spokesperson.

The shooting took place in front of the abandoned Rio Bueno Police Station.

Just last Friday, 28 year-old police constable Garfield Frater, was hit down and killed by a speeding motorist while carrying out spot checks on the Mandela Highway in Kingston.

His colleague who had witnessed the accident was shot and injured later in the night while entering his home. Jeffrey Smith, the driver of the Hyundai Elantra, was charged with manslaughter when he turned up at the Central Village Police Station.
