Senior theatre nurse at the National Chest Hospital, Nicola Brown, became the first Jamaican delegate ever to attend a two-day Thoracic Surgery course in Canada in May.
Brown's participation in the course, held at the Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto, was made possible by health care solutions provider 3M Jamaica.
"Our decision to assist Nurse Brown is a direct result of our commitment to aid the hospitals in any way we can," 3M said in a news release.
After receiving her sponsorship cheque, Brown thanked 3M for the opportunity which, she said, would help her to implement some of the new technologies learned. She also praised the firm for its commitment to strengthening the health sector by staging training courses in Infection Control and Skin Health, as well as making donations of medical and pharmaceutical supplies.
According to the nurse, the National Chest Hospital and University Hospital of the West Indies are the only two hospitals in Jamaica that have a Thoracic Department.
3M Healthcare offers a number of products to the medical market such as Electrodes, Surgical Tapes and Dressings. The company is also responsible for the revolutionary water-less hand scrub (Avagard Surgical Hand Scrub) and the only patient-applied treatment for genital and peri-anal warts - AldaraTM.
