Westmoreland is Denbigh parish champion again

Tuesday, August 03, 2004

WESTMORELAND was yesterday declared the overall parish champions at this year's staging of the Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial Show, copping the coveted Percival Alwyn Broderick Senior Trophy in the process.

The parish emerged the victor having scored 1,082.75 points, ahead of Clarendon in second place with 904.25 points and St Ann in third place with 901.25 points.
This is the 15th consecutive year that Westmoreland is winning the top parish prize. The parish also won sectional prizes for cooperative community effort, agro business and tied with St Ann for the home economics prize.

Owen Dobson, president of the Westmoreland Association of Branch Societies of the Jamaican Agricultural Society (JAS), attributed the victory to the hard work and dedication of the parish organisers.

"I'm feeling very proud about winning... I must give thanks first to the Almighty God, secondly to the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) team, and the JAS team. We have collaborated and we have put out a good show and I think that is what caused us to come out victorious," he told JIS News.
"Westmoreland is enthused we are expecting to continue our winning streak for next year," he said.

He said that the parish organisers made extra effort each year to display a number of agricultural products at the general pavilion, where parishes are expected to display items under at least nineteen different categories.
