Today is the 53rd anniversary of Hurricane Charlie
Observer Reporter
Tuesday, August 17, 2004

TODAY marks the 53rd anniversary of Hurricane Charlie, one of the most devastating hurricanes ever to hit Jamaica.
Charlie claimed 154 lives, left 25,000, people homeless and caused damages estimated at approximately £16 million.

The highest winds of this hurricane were estimated to be 125 mph as the storm took a dangerous path along the island's South Coast.

Roads were blocked and telephone and telegraph services were disrupted, and many areas of the island were without electricity and water for weeks.
