NWC puts more water systems into service
Observer Reporter
Friday, September 17, 2004

THE National Water Commission yesterday restored piped water supply to 40 more of its water supply systems across the island, bringing to more than 100 water supply systems that are now back in operation since the passage of Hurricane Ivan last weekend.

"The situation continues to improve by the hour as more and more systems are brought into operation using restored JPS power, standby generators where available, or gravity flow distribution. The number may even be greater as the restoration reports from remote areas served were often slow in coming in due to poor communication services in some parts of the island," according to the water company's corporate public relations manager, Charles Buchanan.

Buchanan, however, advised its customers that even where systems have been returned into service it will take some time for them to be fully charged. "Additionally customers are to expect that they may receive low water pressure, intermittent supply and, in some instances, discoloured water," he said.

Customers at higher elevations or served by systems that need additional pumping that require electricity may still be without water although the source is now operational.

The NWC, in the meantime, advised customers to treat or boil all drinking water until its systems are fully restored.
