
37 murders last week

THE country's murder toll edged upwards last week with 37 more killings, more than five a day and seven more than the 30 killed the week before.
The police are still not sure why 28 of those persons were killed.
The gun featured in 29 of the 37 murders, with the knife and machete being used in the other eight.
Among the major crimes, there were 46 cases of shooting, eight sexual offences and 21 cases of felonious wounding.
The police also reported.
. 16 break-ins, . four burglaries, . two motor vehicles being stolen, and . one case of praedial larceny.
Two licenced firearms were reported stolen, while the police seized 24 illegally-owned guns, arresting one person in each case. There were seven arrests for fraud, two for arson and 122 for breaching the Dangerous Drugs Act.
Two persons were shot and killed by the police.
One hundred of the 320 criminal acts committed during the week have still not yet been classified as 'cleared up'.
