BLACK. wants Rastas to have a voice in Parliament

WESTERN BUREAU - President of the Jamaica Alliance Movement Ras Astor Black says he has an interest in the West Kingston seat, and is to launch his campaign next week in preparation for the by-election to be held to fill the vacancy left due to the resignation of Edward Seaga, who served Parliament for 43 years.

Black, a Rastafarian, said he was offering himself so that Rastas can have a voice in Parliament.

". I think Rastafari should be in Parliament and I am asking the people in Western Kingston to let a Rastafari represent Rastafari and the people of Jamaica who think and want love in Jamaica be in Parliament," Black told the Observer.

"... Doing things for Rastafari development are taking too long. I don't know if it is because they want to hold down Rastafari, but I want to get projects going and I can't get them going in Jamaica because of bureaucracy. That is why I want a voice.," said Black.

Black ran as candidate in the March 2001 parliamentary by-election in the Northeast St Ann constituency, which was won by the Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP's) Shahine Robinson.

He was also a candidate in the October 16, 2002 general election when he contested the North West St James seat, won by the JLP's Dr Horace Chang.
