Edwin Allen launches $10-m development fund
Observer Reporter
Wednesday, February 02, 2005

EDWIN Allen High School in Clarendon is trying to raise $10 million over five years for a school development fund, launched Friday with an initial injection of $215,000.

The funds will assist needy students enrolled at Edwin Allen as well as finance educational and developmental projects at the school.

The fund managers anticipate that by September, seven months from now when the new academic year begins, they can start dispensing financial assistance.

"We want to allow this fund to grow to a certain amount so that it can attract substantial interest," said chairman of the fund and past student of the school Coy Roache.
Roache said the fund would be targeting donations from different sources to meet the $10-million target.

The monies will be used initially to provide equipment for the school's laboratories, expand the Information Technology Resource Centre, construct new classrooms, and contribute to the Library and Resource Centre, nutrition and sports programmes.

The fund was launched at an awards luncheon at the Golf View Hotel in Mandeville, where some 92 retired persons, long-serving staff members and past board members were honoured.

Edwin Allen also launched its Hall of Fame in which Alvin Day, a past student, was the first inductee.
Principal Elroy Ricketts was also recognised for his 26 years to the school, including 19 as principal.
