BARNES.wins by landslide

RADIO announcer Winston Barnes won a landslide victory, but the Jamaican majority hold on power in the Miramar City Commission, Florida was wrested after a strong campaign by white members of the commission in Tuesday's city-wide elections.

Two of the three Jamaicans - Barnes and Fitzroy Salesman - who contested the polls, retained their seats on the five-member commission. But George Pedlar who ran for a Seat Two failed to hold off the challenge from his three opponents.
The three Jamaicans won control of the Miramar local government body in 2003. Miramar is the third fastest growing major city in the United States.

In Tuesday's elections, Barnes who made a name for himself on Jamaican radio before migrating to the United States and is currently news director of WAVS radio, trounced his four opponents by grabbing 3,272 votes or 49.18 per cent of the total cast for Seat Three. His closest rival was Wendy K Murray who polled 1,225 votes, or 18.41 per cent of the total.

Salesman, running in Seat One, beat three challengers to take 2,898 votes or 43.18 per cent of the total votes cast.
Pedlar's 2,297 votes or 34.16 per cent was not enough to gain him victory over Troy R Samuels who polled 2,610, or 38.81 per cent of the votes.

A fourth Jamaican, Mike Aitcheson, running in the adjoining North Lauderdale District "A" elections was beaten into third place, with 138 votes, compared with 247 for the winner, Gary Frankel.
