The Western Consciousness reggae show which prides itself in showcasing only artistes who spout uplifting lyrics was dragged into obscenity and bottle-throwing disorder early yesterday morning after an unscheduled performance by Fantan Mojah.

From the minute he touched the stage, Mojah spewed arrogant venom, complaining that he was left to perform last because he had had another show. The artiste was into his fifth song, Hungry, when the microphone and monitors were turned down.
"Tell dem fi turn up mi mike," he repeated. The order was met. He then proceeded to berate police officers backstage for the reduction in the microphone volume, claimed that he was being sabotaged and attempted to get the audience, who mostly stood silently and stared blankly at him, to agree.
He then launched into Hail Di King, but after the first few bars the microphone volume was again turned down and he left the stage in a huff saying, "Police ah fight 'gainst I, wha unnu ah do bout dat?" When emcee Cordel Green returned to the stage, a bottle was hurled unto the stage.
This was followed by a few more hurled directly toward the stage. Pandemonium broke out when bottles were thrown from the back to the front of the general audience area. Simultaneously, from an area close to the mixing stand, gunshots rang out, adding to the commotion and sparking a stampede.
The Observer learnt later that the shots were fired by police. The show, which was held at the Llandilo Cultural Centre in Savanna-La-Mar, was also marred by lewd behaviour by Turbulence who uttered obscenities and incessant anti-homosexual ad hoc chatter between his presentations.
