Cops, gunmen in car chase, gunfight on Beechwood Avenue
Observer Reporter
Wednesday, July 06, 2005

A high-speed car chase and gunbattle between cops and gunmen along Beechwood Avenue in Kingston yesterday ended with a woman being mowed down and hospitalised with serious facial injuries, a four-vehicle collision and two men being arrested by police from the Half-Way-Tree station who had laid a trap for men said to be part of a car-stealing ring.

According to the police, cops from the Half-Way-Tree Criminal Investigation Bureau were staking out the suspects who were travelling in a white Toyota Corolla motor car.

The men found out that they were being watched by the cops and tried to escape. With guns blazing, the gunmen and the cops sped down Beechwood Avenue before the gunmen's car hit a student at the Citizens' Advice Bureau and catapulted her body into a parked trailer. The woman was taken to hospital by a passing motorist.

The chase continued for about another 100 yards to the intersection of Lyndhurst Road and Beechwood Avenue, where the gunmen's car collided with a motorbike before hitting a burgundy Toyota Camry which slammed into a Townace caravan. The gunmen's car then careened over the two-foot high perimeter wall of the Lyndhurst Jerk Centre.

The men then fled from the car, but police report that one of the suspects, who was apparently shot during the gunbattle, was found hiding on premises along Lower Beechwood Avenue.

Another man was also held in the incident. (Photos: Joseph Wellington)
