MoBay businessman shot dead

MONTEGO BAY, St James - Fifty-year-old businessman Sammy Ramchandani was yesterday shot and killed by gunmen during a daring robbery at his businessplace - Ruby Jewellers and Gift Shop - located along the usually busy Church Street in this resort town.

Police said that at about 4:20 pm three men entered the store and brandished guns.

Shortly afterwards gunshots were heard and Ramchandani was seen lying on the ground with gunshot wounds.
The armed men, the police said, then robbed the cashier of an undisclosed sum of cash before escaping on foot.

Ramchandani was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Customers and staff members who were in the store at the time of the robbery were not hurt. But at least two workers who witnessed the incident were reportedly taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

The Ruby Jewellers and Gift Centre has been in operation for three years.

Household helper chopped to death

MICHELLE Knight, a household helper, was chopped to death Thursday during a robbery at Margaret Drive, Hope Pastures, Kingston 6.

Knight, 28, resided at May Day district in Manchester.
The CCN reported that at about 2:30 pm a white van was seen driving away from the house at Margaret Drive, shortly after two men were seen leaving the premises.

Concerned residents then called the police, who found Knight chopped to death and the house ransacked. The body was removed to the morgue for post-mortem examination.
The Papine Police, who are investigating, said several household items including televisions, a computer and an assortment of liquor were missing from the house.

18th annual neighbourhood watch conference today

THE Neighbourhood Watch Movement will today hold its 18th annual conference at the Ebony Park Heart Academy in Toll Gate, Clarendon under the theme, 'Empowering Communities through Education'.

Head of the Police Community Relations Division, Assistant Superintendent Marlene Wilson-Christie, told JIS News that the main aim of the conference is to "discuss weaknesses and strengths of neighbourhood watch groups" as well as use the conference as a "crime prevention tool".

Security Minister Peter Phillips and Commissioner of Police Lucius Thomas are scheduled to participate in the conference, along with Deputy Commissioner in charge of crime, Mark Shields and Public Defender Howard Hamilton.

Yallahs pipeline back in service

THE critical 19-mile long Yallahs pipeline that serves hundreds of residents in the Llandewey Valley in St Thomas, as well as thousands more in Kingston and St Andrew, via the Mona Reservoir treatment plant, is now back in operation.

The pipeline had been out of operation since suffering extensive damage from Hurricane Dennis in July of this year.
Immediately following the damages, local contractor Tankweld Special Projects was engaged by the National Water Commission (NWC) to urgently restore the pipeline into operation in the shortest possible time.
