PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) - An expert on the Quran was to be flown to Trinidad to testify at the preliminary inquiry into terrorism charges against an Islamic leader, officials said Monday.
Authorities would not name the expert, citing security concerns, but said he was an authority on the Quran, the Islamic holy book.
The expert was to give an opinion on the November 4 sermon by Yasin Abu Bakr, in which he called for war against rich Muslims who refuse to pay 'zakaat,' an Islamic tithe for the poor.
Abu Bakr, who led a failed 1990 coup, could face up to 25 years in prison if found guilty.
In 1990, Abu Bakr's group bombed police headquarters, stormed Parliament and took the prime minister and his Cabinet hostage in a rebellion that left 24 people dead.
The rebels surrendered after they were promised amnesty. The government withdrew the amnesty and prosecuted them, but the charges were dismissed on appeal.
