Portia expects at least 1,770 votes
Observer Reporter
Friday, February 24, 2006

TEAM Portia, the campaign organisation supporting People's National Party (PNP) leadership hopeful, Portia Simpson Miller, said yesterday that it expects the votes of at least 1,770 delegates attending tomorrow's conference to elect the new leader.

The figure was reported at a press briefing held by the team at the Knutsford Court Hotel, New Kingston.

According to Paul Burke, Team Portia has already received 1,794 forms from delegates declaring their support for Simpson Miller. He said that 203 of these forms were still in the fields and that no overtures were made to delegates in East Central St Andrew, South St Andrew or Central Westmoreland - the constituencies of her three opponents.
The register for Saturday's vote has just under 4,000 delegates.

Chairman of Team Portia, Easton Douglas commented, "where we are now, we are in a position of comfort. There is no discomfiture as far as we are concerned with respect to the delegates support for our candidate".

He said that he was satisfied that the party's secretariat had taken steps to put in place all that was necessary for a "fair and just" election process.
