SIMPSON MILLER. prime minister-designate

TRIBUTES continue to pour in for Local Government Minister Portia Simpson Miller, the new president of the ruling People's National Party and prime minister-designate.
"It is our belief that she has what it takes to lead the country in a direction of growth as well as to unite this nation," said the National Workers' Union in its tribute.

"We wish her the best of health and extend to her the co-operation of the National Workers' Union in her endeavour to lift the living standard of the Jamaican people," the union said.

The Jamaica Manufacturers' Association, meanwhile, said Minister Portia Simpson Miller's victory comes against the background of a long and hard fought campaign "and we commend her for her tenacity".

And the Jamaica Teachers' Association said it was impressed with Simpson Miller's intention to unify the country around positive values and attitudes and her commitment to the transformation of the education system

"The JTA looks foward to collaboration, consultation and cooperation on education policy issues as we seek to maximise the development of our human capital to effectively compete in the competitive global village," said president Ruel Reid.

Meanwhile, the Jamaica Exporters' Association (JEA) said it was committed to national development through exports and stood ready to work with Simpson Miller and be a part of the national team in its efforts to improve the standard of living of all Jamaicans.

"The JEA is taking steps that can significantly increase Jamaica's exports and we look forward to your engagement in this process towards the achievement of sustainable benefits for the national economy," the association said.

The JEA said it was confident that Simpson Miller would use her new office to continue the transformation of the nation "to a place where once again love, hope and civility are the cornerstone of Jamaican life".
