Cops rescue alleged homo from UWI students

Wednesday, April 05, 2006

POLICE last evening had to rescue a man on the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies, after he was beaten by students who accused him of being a homosexual.

The Constabulary Communication Network, the police's information arm, told the Observer last night that the alleged homosexual was taken to the Papine Police Station, in the wake of the incident. However, with a number of university students following, cops had to take him to another station where they took statements from him.
The CCN confirmed that the man was beaten, but said injuries were not serious.

The alleged homosexual was said to have propositioned a male student inside one of the campus' bathrooms.
The incident, students claimed, happened some time after 6:00 pm inside a bathroom referred to as "the forbidden", located at the Faculty of the Humanities and Education section of the campus.

After the alleged homosexual, who the police said last night was in his early 20s, made the advance, the student made an alarm and the alleged homosexual ran. He was chased from the faculty to Taylor Hall where he was said to be beaten and insults hurled at him.

The university's security intervened, but as the crowd began to grow they called in the police, who themselves had difficulties rescuing the young man and had to fire a shot in the air to ward off the students.
