MONTEGO BAY, St James - The police yesterday shot dead a gangster who they said was wanted by the constabulary.
The dead man, who was said to be a member of the notorious Stone Crushers Crew - one of four gangs accused of terrorising residents of the parish - was identified only as 'Spiffy'. He resided at Sammy Bush in Norwood, St James.
The police said they recovered an illegal firearm during the shoot-out.
According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), at about 1:15 am yesterday the police went on an operation in Sammy Bush, Norwood where they recently recovered several guns, ammunition, bullet proof vests, and other items.
The CCN said that upon approaching a house, Spiffy emerged through a back door and opened fire at the police party.
Spiffy, the CCN said, was found suffering from gunshot wounds clutching a .38 Smith and Wesson revolver following a gunfight. He was pronounced dead at hospital.
Spiffy is the second gang member killed since the photographs of nine of the most wanted men in the parish were published by the police two weeks ago. The first, Garfield Sawyers, was killed on April 30.
In the meanwhile, two others - Jason Lyttle, who was apprehended by the police, and Jason James, who turned himself in - are in custody.
