Clarke says systems in place to prevent bird flu

CLARKE... we have put systems in place

JAMAICA has put measures in place to prevent a possible outbreak of avian influenza (Bird Flu), says Agriculture Minister Roger Clarke.

"Concerns about avian influenza have not passed us. We at the (agriculture) ministry, with the Ministry of Health, are working to make sure that we do everything to prevent the Avian flu from arriving in Jamaica, and we have put systems in place - just in case it arrives - to deal with that event," Clarke said.

Clarke told the Observer that the agriculture ministry was working in collaboration with all the broiler companies to monitor the movement of chickens throughout the island.

"Surveys have been done to know where all the farms are, and chickens sold to small farmers are reported to us," Clarke explained.

He said birds were also being tested for the virus, and inspections were being done to monitor sanitation of the farms.

He was speaking Tuesday at the opening of the two-day seminar on Food and Nutrition Security and Vulnerability Profiling held at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston.

In addition, Clarke told the gathering that the importation of poultry was been controlled by the agriculture ministry, which was working with personnel involved in wildlife to track the movement of migratory birds.

"We have everything in place," he said.
