UWI principal promises to address concerns of students

Saturday, October 27, 2007

PRINCIPAL of the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Professor Gordon Shirley, promised yesterday to ensure that the concerns of the students regarding accommodation and security are addressed.

Shirley, addressing a press conference yesterday following Thursday night's demonstration by scores of UWI students, mainly from the Rex Nettleford and A Z Preston halls of residence, said that the administration would have to rethink its approach to campus security, among other things.
He said the process would, however, require some effort on the part of the students, some of whom facilitate security breaches on the halls.

"When I visited the [area] I found that some of the doors were left ajar. And students will do some of these things because students are students, they don't like to walk around with their swipe card, or their friend is coming over from another dorm and they leave the door ajar," Shirley said.

"The students also had concerns about the facilities on the halls. Those are areas that both the maintenance units and the student services director will take on board. I am hoping that normalcy will be returned [soon], especially at this time of year when they (students) are trying to move away from their extra-curricular activities and getting ready for exams," said Shirley.
