St Ann seniors graduate from computer course

Thursday, December 06, 2007

Dundeen Ferguson (left), representative of the Alzheimer Foundation, presents a certificate to 87-year-old Whelel Morris during a St Ann Senior Citizens' Association graduation exercise last Thursday in Brown's Town, St Ann.

TWENTY-THREE senior citizens and volunteers graduated last Thursday, after completing an eight-month computer course at the Brown's Town Seventh-day Adventist Church in St Ann, marking the sixth successive year for the programme that is sponsored jointly by the St Ann Parish Library, St Ann Senior Citizens' Association and Sandals Dunn's River Resort.

Among the graduates was 87-year-old Whelel Morris, who successfully completed the course and was a picture of pride as she strode up in her graduation gown to collect her certificate.

Guest speaker, Minister of State in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security Andrew Gallimore lauded the graduates and organisers for coming forward to discover the challenges of the technological age, and demonstrating that they are never too old to learn.

Gallimore said the government plans to put in place a body that will implement programmes aimed at taking care of the affairs of senior citizens.

Othneil Lawrence, member of parliament for North West St Ann, presented a cheque to the seniors programme while Lyndsay Isaacs, regional public relations manager for Sandals/Beaches Resorts, presented a computer and printer to the senior citizens' association on behalf of the resort, and confirmed Sandals' continued support of the programme.

In a reciprocating gesture, Carmen Wilson, organiser for the St Ann Senior Citizens' Association and her team handed over baby clothes made by the seniors to the St Ann's Bay Hospital paediatric department, along with 150 uniforms to three schools in rural St Ann.

Wilson also encouraged individuals who are not members of a club to get involved, as the rewards are beneficial.
