Guyana hosting regional workshop on mediation in labour disputes

Friday, April 25, 2008

A regional workshop on conciliation and mediation in labour disputes opened yesterday at the Le Meridien Pegasus in Guyana. It ends next Wednesday.

The course has targeted mediators and conciliators in industrial disputes of the labour ministries across the region.

International Labour Organisation (ILO) consultant Samuel J Goolsarran said participants should acquire a better understanding of the styles, techniques and approaches used in conflict management and dispute resolution processes, negotiations and mediation and conciliation.
It was being conducted, he said, in response to the growing need for improved conflict management skills and was expected to contribute to fostering better labour relations through census-based approaches.

The workshop, the ILO said, was the last in a series of four regional training workshops that were designed to enhance the capacity of labour ministry officials as well as representatives of employers' and workers' organisations to perform their roles and responsibilities as they relate to various aspects of labour administration.

More than 30 representatives of 19 Caribbean countries are in attendance.
