Orrett Fisher appointed acting director of elections

Thursday, May 08, 2008

FISHER. I think we have a very excellent team in place which has been working closely with the ECJ

ORRETT Fisher has been appointed acting director of elections, in the wake of the resignation of Danville Walker from that position.

The announcement of Fisher's appointment was made yesterday by Professor Errol Miller, chairman of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ), during a press briefing at the Dominica Drive, Kingston offices of the ECJ.

Fisher, who has been promoted from assistant director of elections with responsibility for administration, has worked with the EOJ for 13 years. He previously served as acting director in 1996, before the appointment of Walker.

Professor Miller said the ECJ had every confidence that Fisher would lead the affairs of the EOJ in an efficient manner.

Fisher said he was ready to direct the affairs of the EOJ until a director was appointed,.

"There are always challenges at the Electoral Office and there is always a busy schedule, but I think we have a very excellent team in place which has been working closely with the ECJ in implementing policies and all that will continue under my guidance," said Fisher.

He commended the former director of elections for being a source of inspiration to him.

Fisher will be supported by the current assistant directors, Earl Simpson (in charge of field operations) and Valerie Smith (with responsibility for information systems).

The post of director of elections is to be advertised in the print media, after a review of the term of reference and job description for the position, Professor Miller said yesterday.
